Assistive Technology Basics


1. In your own words define the term assistive technology? Give an example of one type of assistive technology.
-Assistive technology involves the use of tools and tactics that help remove any barriers that are affecting a person from using technology appropriately. Assistive technology also helps supporting students with connections and knowledge.

2. What are access technologies? Give an example of a type of access technology?
-Access technologies are “applications of technology,” that enables student with disabilities to better “access” instructional materials that can be incorporated into the “general curriculum.” These devices help make up for any sensory, cognitive and physical disabilities a person might have. Alternate keyboards and page turners are examples of access technologies.

3. What are adaptive technologies? Give an example of a type of adaptive technology?
-Adaptive technology are devices made for people with disabilities. People who are have a handicap or have learning disabilities are able to use adaptive technologies to perform tasks that they were not able to do before. Adaptive technologies include hearing aids, text-to-speak (a reading and spelling help) and and speech recognition programs.

4. What are the implications of IDEA for schools and the use of technology in the classroom?
-Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) says that public schools need to provide early intervention for children with disabilities. This means that schools must provide proper and necessary technology to help these students learn and complete tasks easily and efficiently. Through the use of these technologies, students with disabilities will be prepared for independent living, further education and employment.

5. What are IDEA’s stipulations regarding the provision of assistive technology with regard to classroom access, home access, and cost to the parent?
-The IDEA's stipulations regarding the provision of assistive technology are communication, manipulation, mobility, and learning.

6. What does FAPE mean? What is an IEP?
-FAPE means a free and approropriate public education. IEP means the development for children identified as needing special education must idicate that AT has been considered to "to provide meaning accsee to the general curriculum.
